Before being collected for our Airport transfer, we had a brisk stroll through some of our favourite streets. Enjoying the quirky modern alongside the ordered & classical past.
Flying over the strait of Gibraltor, we were grateful for a clear view out the plane window & were astonished to see just how close Spain & Morocco are!
The arrival into Marrakech has topped our 'worst airport experience' list! In Customs there were only two officials taking their merry time going slowly through each individual, stamping passports & checking. Another flight had landed soon after ours & on it were a lot of locals clearly returning home. Our flight was full of mainly 'foreigners' & we all queued in an orderly fashion & went into zombie state whilst the line moved so agonizingly slowly! The locals were not impressed & with one voice shouted out to the officials. They then proceeded to break through the barriers & push & shove their way to the front as a mass. There was a lot of shouting & stunned looks from us! It was also quite scarey. We were expecting police with batons, but no....NOTHING was done about it! We had an advantage being tall , so we didn't lose each other in the rush, & we were also able to stand our ground & form a barricade so a few shorter people ahead of us could get through. I extended myself to stop a pushy arab man from stealing my spot!! Sometimes being tall is a major nuisance, other times, the intimidation factor comes in very handy....that & my GLARE! We were inclined to take the next flight back to Spain!!
After that you can imagine how welcome the soothing ambience of our Riad was! Three floors high, it wraps around a central courtyard, where a fountain trickles, providing a massage to the senses.
The terrace is a delightful spot for a quick plunge & also where we will eat breakfast....bliss!
The whole Riad is decorated in the wonderful artisan work so famous for this region. This is the ceiling of our bedroom...
...which is long & thin & even has a couch suitable for any long legged Sultan to stretch out on!
Exhausted after a week of poor sleep & the day's events, we dined in for dinner & the food was so good, we wonder whether we'll bother eating anywhere else within these pink walls of the Marrakech Medina!
